Total Gym Cru was formed in the winter of 2003. The artists were interested in making work that was different from the traditional museum or gallery pieces. On April 25, 2005, Total Gym presented ZONES, an outdoor exhibition of temporary architecture. The group's work reflected a variety of concerns in contemporary society, including sustainability, homeless and nomadic ways of life, interactivity, and border crossing.
